Madness and Myths

I was recently on vacation in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. While there, I stopped by the local monastery [Little Portion Monastery and Hermitage] to walk the grounds and buy their handmade goods. Their grounds were pleasant and their cookies delightful! However, what really drew my attention were the icons in their main chapel. One icon in particular, St. Anthony of Egypt, had something to say:

“A time is coming when men will go mad, and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him saying, “You are mad, you are not like us.”

The Apostle Paul gives us a similar warning in 2 Timothy 4:3-4:

“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”

I sense we’re approaching peak madness in the United States, especially when it comes to gender ideology and other nonscientific ideas [myths]. I’m not a biologist, but I do know:

- A girl has two X chromosomes

- A boy has an X and a Y chromosome

- Your sex and everything else about you is programmed at conception, when your unique genetic code gets established. This miracle of life was described in Psalm 139:13 well before Watson and Crick arrived on the scene.

How do you survive in an era where madness and myths run wild? First, use St Anthony’s greatest tool: prayer. Pray for the strength and words to confront madness head on. Then, push back. Don’t be afraid, the truth is on your side, and it will set you free!
